Don’t use programme for political mileage, Pakatan told

Story and photo by GEETHA KRISHNAN

THE Pakatan Rakyat politicians should not strive for political mileage by using the Selangor state’s resources that are meant for all.

Citing the Mesra Usia Emas programme for senior citizens, MCA central committee member Datuk Liew Yuen Keong said the forms distributed were only signed by Pakatan elected representatives.

A sum of RM2,500 is given out to the senior citizen’s selected beneficiary upon death to help out with funeral expenses. All senior citizens in Selangor aged 60 and above qualify for the programme.

“People should also have better accessibility to the forms. Under the previous Jasamu DiKenang programme by the Barisan Nasional, forms were also available at district offices,” Liew said.

He was speaking at a press conference at the Serdang MCA division in Seri Kembangan on Thursday.

“I am not questioning the programme but the procedure. Jasamu DiKenang forms were not only signed by assemblymen but also members of residents associations and village security and development committees (JKKK),” he said.

Liew pointed out that only those who registered with the Mesra Usia Emas programme were entitled to the benefits while the Jasamu DiKenang programme did not require registration.

“Aid of RM2,000 was usually disbursed within 24 hours provided the necessary documents were in order. With the state government’s tie-up with Takaful Insurance for its programme, I foresee delays.”

Earlier, Liew announced that poor families and the disabled keen on applying for Federal Government aid could do so at the Serdang MCA through the Cari project under the Social Welfare Department.

He said the government’s move to increase welfare aid from RM300mil to RM800mil via the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry would lessen the burden of the poor.

The Cari project will give RM300 monthly to poor children who are still schooling, orphans, children whose parents are unable to work or in jail and families with a joint income of not more than RM720.

Similar aid will be given to senior citizens aged 60 and above with no source of income and family to depend on. disabled people registered with the Social Welfare Department and are self-employed or working for someone with an income not exceeding RM750.

Applicants caring for the disabled or people with chronic illnesses with a joint family income of less than RM3,000 monthly would also be considered for the aid.
